‘It was the coming of war that caused the downfall of the constitutional monarchy’
History
3 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year Uploaded: 2024
Under the constitutional monarchy, King Louis XVI’s powers were limited by a constitution that established a parliament and gave the people of France certain rights and freedoms. There was ongoing and increasing political tensions and divisions within France’s political system and the declaration of war on Austria in April 1792 significantly increased these problems. It is arguable that whilst there were multiple contributing factors to the downfall of the constitutional monarchy such as Louis own actions, increased politicisation and radicalism, reforms etc, the war was the catalyst that led to extreme discontent amongst the people and eventually, the formation of a republic.
