This essay aims to unpack Feng Xiaogang’s The Banquet as a film that fantasizes about complete patriarchal control by recognizing and allowing upheaval caused by female sexuality, but ultimately eliminating this possibility by seeing to the reinstation of patriarchal control. The moment that Wan attempts to fully transcend her gender boundaries and adopt a male identity, she is eliminated from the social structure. Feng’s film focuses greatly on the development of Wan’s capacity to uproot masculine dominance—she becomes the ultimate representation of female sexuality in all of its dangers. Yet, she eventually ceases to exist, an expulsion from the patriarchal regime that is manifested through her death—which I posit to be a solidification of patriarchal power and its inevitable triumph.
