“We are entering an era where media will be everywhere, and we will use all kinds of media in relation to one another...” (Jenkins, 2001). This research examines the effect of convergence on the library and archiving industry, specifically focusing on the practice of digitising files in libraries. Maurya (2012) defines a digital library as “dynamic store house of digitized information… digital video, e-documents, e-journals, e-print, microform, CDs, DVDs, etc”. For the sake of this research, Maurya’s (2012) definition will pertain to all references of ‘library’ throughout the paper. Due to the breadth of this topic, the concept of cloud computing and technicalities in regards to computer science have been excluded. The impact of convergence on the following aspects of the industry will be discussed: (1) the transformation of information preservation, (2) technological limitations, and (3) non-technical limitations; labour and qualified industry professionals and legalities. The dominant opinions regarding the effects of convergence on libraries concern the risk of data obsolescence and the lack of trained professionals within the industry. Whilst these are only two of the core issues surrounding the converging practices within libraries, as technological limitations recede we are faced with non-technological issues such as access, selection, legalities and finances (Kastellec 2012; Maurya 2012).
