Indymedia and the birth of global digital activism Thousands of protesters, in 1999, shut down the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Summit in downtown Seattle “Battle for Seattle". This is an important event in the history of digital activism and online social movements, as it saw the emergence of Indymedia, a global network of Independent Media Centres (IMCs), where activists used "free and open source software" to share stories, photos and live webcasts of protests, bypassing the mainstream media and "becoming the media" for a burgeoning global movement. REQUIRED READING NOTES: Juris, J. S. (2005) 189-208 ● Juris begins his analysis of how Indymedia activists used digital technologies to "coordinate actions, build networks, practice media activism, and physically manifest their emerging political ideals". ● The horizontal networking logic facilitated by new digital technologies provides an effective method of social movement organising, and represents a broader model for creating alternative forms of social, political, and economic organisation.
