Respiration is essential for bodily function, survival and homeostasis; it provides cells with oxygen (O2) and removes carbon dioxide (CO2) from cells. Oxygen is carried in the blood as oxyhaemoglobin and CO2 as bicarbonate (Mason, 2013c). Ventilation is air exchange between the lungs and the atmosphere (Silverthorn, 2012) and consists of inspiration and expiration. Alveolar ventilation occurs via gas diffusion (down a partial pressure gradient) between capillaries and alveoli and is equal to the total ventilation minus dead space (Mason, 2013a). Altering ventilation rate will alter alveolar ventilation and therefore blood gas composition (determined by measuring the partial pressure of that gas).
