intro: Goffman and Elias’ work on the distinct nature of the public and the private worlds raises significant observations on the human condition, highlighting the differing influence of both on the individual. Their respective theories provide a deeper insight to how an individual’s private and public world can be viewed. Goffman’s exploration of the private and public world is formed through several phenomena, including the game situation, encounters of all kinds, face-to-face interactions and utilising frame analysis. Elias explores the individual in regards to their specific drives, drawing from Freud, and takes the oppressive force of society into consideration through via recognition of the social constraint towards the self-constraint. Furthermore, Elias delves into history to form an understanding of the civilising process, charting its development and its transit between the public and private world. By contrasting and comparing these theories, one can form a worthy line of inquiry to better inform our understanding of Goffman and Elias’ take on the public and private world.
