The psychological aspects of injury amongst athletes within sport or exercise can be an incredibly controversial topic among exercise professionals. However, research suggests that some of the biggest psychological difficulties of an athlete’s injury occurs when the athlete attempts to return to the sport. Understanding the emotional state of injured athletes can greatly assist them in their recovery, (Tracey, 2003). Determining whether an athlete is ready to return to sport should not only be based on their physical health but their emotional and through using a developmental perspective and psychological models, this determination can be made. This essay will aim to review the literature on the psychological aspects of an athlete returning to sport after rehabilitation and highlight the strengths and weaknesses within the research.
