Why did both classical democracy and republicanism place such emphasis on restricting the power of political leaders? Is leadership a problem for democracy? The classical models of democracy and republicanism has without a doubt greatly influenced many modern political democracies especially in the West. Even though the democratic institution in the twenty-first century possesses enormous power not only on a political and social level but also economically, by examining the development of democratic institutions, evidence suggests that democracy is not only complex but also fragile. This essay will firstly explore the meaning of classical democracy by examining the structure of the political institutional features in ancient Athens then the essay will focus on the concept of “People’s Power”. Secondly, the essay will then examine the core values and practices of republicanism with a focus on the writings of Marsilius of Padua and especially the concept of “Popular Sovereignty”. It is important to note that due to the complex nature of democracy this essay will only focus on certain values and practices of democracy.
