The Everest Simulation is an online mountaineering simulation project which requires a group of 5 to 7 individuals to participate in. The area of assessment of the simulation is divided into two parts. Participants are assigned to play a specified role with different personal goals to achieve. In addition, there is also a team goal which requires the group to climb to the summit of the mountain in the simulation. Strategies and leadership are to be displayed during the process to maximize the chances of attaining the goals. How different leadership style and strategies influences the ultimate performances of the group will be described and explained in detail in this reflective report by comparing the results of the two simulations executed. The results in the first simulation was unsatisfactory with a score of 28%. The group was unfamiliar with the rules of the game and started the game without any effective strategies because only brief background information was provided. This indicates that a well-developed strategy with sufficient communication among groupmates is required in order to improve the result during the second simulation. The importance and effect of effective strategies on achieving both personal and team goals will be explained in detail in this report. Moreover, leadership style also plays a significant role in the success of the simulation. By comparing the differences in leadership styles of the laissez-faire leadership style and the democratic leadership style executed in the two simulations, we can exhibit the cost and benefit of both styles. A more systematic and organized leadership style will be observed during the second simulation. Based on the Path-goal theory, this style of leadership involves being directive and participative. Overall speaking, the Everest simulation is a well-established team project reminding us to flexibly use and apply knowledge and ideas about management that we have learnt on different situations faced in our daily life.
