WHY STUDY SOCIAL CHANGE? • Every year, Australia spends in excess of $250bn pa on social purpose (health, welfare, education and more), representing about 20% of the country’s GDP and is rapidly increasing. • In the last 40 years, this has increased from 20% of expenditures to 56% • In 2050, it is estimated that half of government expenditure will be spent on health, age pensions and aged care – this is from 25% today. • Things are not changing e.g. in addressing place-based disadvantage or mental health problems • Things are not changing fast enough e.g. responding to Indigenous disadvantage • Things are getting worse e.g. in relation to affordable housing
