Mekong Delta region has long been called the rice bowl of Vietnam, playing a vital role in commodity production for both domestic market and export. This report aims to enrich understanding of the poverty in this region by discussing the causes of poverty, income and employment, rural urban disparity, women issues, and social indicators of poverty. In general, the poor households have limited access to local decision making processes, depend much on unskilled labour work and suffer poverty related issues such as temporary housing and insufficient health care. Poverty reduction programs therefore need to better target the disadvantaged groups by involving them into the process of poverty alleviation and strengthening the capacity of local institutions and officials
