Spaced Out: The effects of Distributed Practice, Massed Practice and Mind Wandering
PSY 10008 - Fundamentals of Psychology
11 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year Uploaded: 2023
This report investigates the difference between distributed practice and massed practice and their effect on test performance for a reading task. It also examines the effect that mind wandering has on test performance. The sample consisted of 114 students enrolled in first year psychology units (63.16% female, 46.84% male). Participants answered a 20-question test after completing either a distributed practice study or massed practice study. Participants were also asked to respond to 12 probes at 20-minute intervals signifying if they were mind wandering. As predicted, the distributed practice condition led to a better test performance than the massed practice condition. The prediction that mind wandering would lead to worse test performance was also supported. The research could be used to inform teachers and learners in the creation of pedagogical tools.
