The state is the most important actor in world politics. Discuss this statement with reference to at least two ‘paradigms’ of international relations theory
PL1000 - Introduction to World Politics
4 Found helpful • 9 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
World politics is the structure and flux of interactions and relationships of the international community, which are determined by the relationships between political communities with restricted borders, a population of citizens and a structure of government, states. Two main actors that regulate and change the dynamics of these relationships are nation states and non-state actors. States depend on and trust other states to maintain peace and a power balance in the world society, and have achieved this through actions as states, in addition to non-state actors contributing. Two dominating theories in world politics, realism and liberalism, have varying political ideologies, where realism identifies the state, through its security and power as the most significant actor in world politics, and liberalism which supports both non-state and state actors as contributing significantly to the international political community.
