Based on learning experiences within the unit as well as within prior units, in addition to external sources of information, my view on the concepts of big data in auditing and continuous auditing has been constantly evolving overtime. During my experiences during ACCG340 (Auditing & Assurance) the idea of continuous auditing was briefly mentioned as a supplementary to the key learnings, however a heavy focus was given on the process of manual audits and how to conduct year-end audits based on assertions through a more traditional approach. When reflecting back on the article ‘Toward Effective Big Data Analysis in Continuous Auditing’ (Zhang et al, 2015), a huge emphasis in the foreseeable future is the idea of continuous auditing to assist both the internal and external auditor when it comes to identifying exceptions or misstatements and provide assurance to clients simultaneously or not long after the occurrence of events. However, as with all the benefits that come out of using Big Data and continuous auditing, negatives arise including data confidentiality, data consistency and data identification.
