Bullying has been defined differently by many but the key factor in all definitions boils down to the same thing – bullying involves behaviour that physically, emotionally and or psychologically harms another. In recent times, workplace bullying is becoming more rampant as society becomes increasingly competitive and many do not mind using their colleagues as a stepping stone to ascend the corporate ladder. Such behaviour is not surprising as this ‘every man for himself’ mindset breeds an environment that exacerbates bullying. Some feel that there is no one to blame but the bully, while others believe that there are other factors at play in workplace bullying. Likewise, opinions about how one should go about addressing this issue vary. Whatever the cause or causes of workplace bullying, its effects remain pressing. Therefore, it is important that employers and their employees work together to eradicate this distasteful behaviour and, with the help of the government, find viable solutions in order to create a bully-free workplace for all.
