This document covers the effect of the protection policy and what it did to aboriginal Australians. Australia and their effects: Aborigines Protection Act (1890s to 1950s): Indigenous survivors of frontier conflict were moved onto reserves or missions. State and Territory laws were put in place to control relations between Aboriginal people and other Australians. The Aborigines Protection Board controlled the lives of Aboriginal people in New South Wales. Devastating effects on Aboriginal family life ensued, including forced removal of children for training and displacement of ‘half-castes’ from reserves. Legacy and Trauma: The trauma endured by the Stolen Generations remains profound. Enforced assimilation policies continued into the 20th century. Reserves were closed, and people encouraged to move to towns. The Aboriginal Welfare Board replaced the Aborigines Protection Board in 1940 but continued similar policies. Contemporary Context: Although Australia has transitioned to trade liberalization, some countries maintain trade protection. Due to the globalized nature of the Australian economy, other countries’ protection policies affect consumers, firms, and governments in Australia12.
