7 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

The end of World War II brought much relief to great suffering for many. However, the middle of the 20th century marked the beginning of a new conflict; a rivalry between the world’s superpowers. Driven by the countries’ desires to prove their superiority politically, economically, technologically and militarily, the United States and the USSR entered a 45-year period of geopolitical tension – the Cold War. The war intensified the threat of the spread of communism throughout the world, compelling the US to prove superiority to the USSR in all areas. Space exploration stood confidently as the next frontier; a new arena for rivalry. After the launch in 1957 of a Soviet R-7 intercontinental missile, Sputnik, the Space Race began. The motivation behind the United States’ policy towards the Space Race leaves much room for doubt, with their participation indicating a desire to compete with the USSR as opposed to ensure the safety and security of their citizens during a period of time in which the US was already facing political and military unrest.
