Psychological Research Shows That Eyewitness Testimony is Not Always Accurate, Therefore it Should Not Be Used in the Criminal Justice System. Discuss.

Eyewitness testimony has been used in the criminal justice system for many years. However, recent psychological research demonstrates that there are many factors that can affect the accuracy of an eyewitness testimony. This could change the validity of the eyewitness testimony as evidence in court. Eyewitness testimony is not always accurate as our memory is vulnerable and easily distorted. In the criminal justice system, the time before questioning in which the witness has the chance to discuss the events with other witnesses can affect their memory. The types of questions the witnesses are asked also may affect what information is given as evidence. To add onto this, jurors tend to believe that a witness’ confidence when giving a testimony is correlated with testimony accuracy, which is not factual in most cases. Therefore, eyewitness testimony should be used in the criminal justice system as a support to physical evidence, rather than as a sole piece of evidence to incriminate a suspect.
