CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (CNS) - Consists of brain and spinal cord - Control centre of our movement o Integrates sensory information o Generates responses o Sends responses to muscle for execution PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTME (PNS) - Nerve connecting spinal cord with other parts of body - Subdivided into o Afferent (or sensory) division o Efferent (or motor) division NEURON: Basic structure of nervous system - Nerve cells that receive and send information - 200 billion in nervous system o Different types of neurons, but most share similar structure NEURAL IMPULSES: - Neurons transmit neural impulses (messages) from one part of body to another - Neural transmission, occurs through an electrochemical process STRUCTUE OF NEURONS Cell body (or soma) - Contains nucleus - Metabolic centre of cell - Works to maintain homeostasis (physiological equilibrium) of neuron) Axon: - Send information to other structures; e.g. neurons or muscles - Some coated in myelin – increase transmission speed Dendrites: - Receive information - Number may vary from none to thousands
