6 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

Scrutinising Sigmund Freud's Oedipal reading of William Shakespeare's epic Hamlet. Charts its progression in the play and alternative readings/explanations. Discusses non-Oedipal reasoning behind Hamlet's lethargy, his antagonism towards Claudius as well as the enigmatic relationship he harbours with Gertrude. Particular focus on the role of social context of Freud and Shakespeare and the inspiration behind Freud's conclusions as a mirror of the Ancient Greek philosopher Sophocles' work in the Theban Plays. Major concepts scrutinised include: the revenge tragedy plot, the religious imperative, the feminine struggle (both Gertrude & Ophelia's paternal/fraternal sexual and societal suppression) and the omnipresent nihilism of Hamlet. Ultimate contention is that an Oedipal lens does not empirically apply when attempting to analyse the motives of young Hamlet in Shakespeare's play.
