All the factors mentioned in the mind maps attached above, relating to factors such as light, temperature, nutrients, availability of water and carbon dioxide, and the pH of the soil, are essential for the growth of a plant. However, on the basis of the criteria aforementioned pertaining to what would constitute the most effective strategy for the growth of a non-seasonal vegetable that is grown in a greenhouse, it was recognised that a strategy that relates to the factor of light was the most important. Light is essential for photosynthesis to occur, which is a process whereby carbon dioxide and water molecules react within the chlorophyll in plant cells to form glucose and oxygen. The glucose molecules are essential for respiration, through which ATP is produced, an energy carrying molecule that is required for functions such as growth and reproduction. For most plants, a 1% increase in light results in an approximately 0.5% to 1% increase in the harvest yield (Venter, 2017). Furthermore, out of all the factors mentioned, a strategy would involving light would be the easiest to implement for farmers, the cheapest and most time effective.
