Edgar Allan Poe an American writer known for composing morbid, macabre and mysterious tales during the late eighteenth century formally known as the romantic period. “The man of the crowd” written by Poe in 1840 as well as “The tell-tale heart” written in 1843 simillarily awakens a sense of contemplation and curiosity of the readers. This is highlighted through Poe’s unusual use of character, and characterisation in the authors short stories. Poe’s short story “The man of the crowd” focuses on the nameless narrator who has an unusual habit of examining individuals around him with immense detail as well as compartmentalizing them based on their behaviour, dress and actions.
