An Investigation of the Carbohydrates Metabolised by Yeast
FIS0084 - Biology 1
6 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year Uploaded: 2021
Cellular respiration is the process involving the breakdown of complex molecules and the release of energy in the form of heat and potential energy, which used to form Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). Cellular respiration can be carried on either in the presence or absence of oxygen. When there is the presence of oxygen, the cell will carry out aerobic respiration which is the complete breakdown of chemical compounds giving an energy yield of 38 ATP. Under inadequate oxygen condition, the cell will perform anaerobic respiration, which is the partial breakdown of the chemical compounds to produce 2 ATP. Cellular respiration involves many reactions but they can be summed up with this chemical equation: C6H12O6+ 6O26CO2+ 6H2O+ Energy (Cellular Respiration, n.d.). The purpose to carry out this experiment is to investigate the process of cellular respiration within the yeast cell and to observe how are carbohydrates metabolised by yeast.
