It is the emphasis on diversity that is both a characteristic of liberalism as well as a point of confusion in understanding it as an ideology. As Jones says, "to be a liberal is to be committed to a particular vision of the good life"1 and yet the multiplicity of these conceptions of the good causes different liberal theorists to appear diametrically opposed. However, in order to situate political theorists such as Rawls and Nozick within liberal philosophy, it is more important to consider the frameworks they provide for people to pursue whichever conception of the good they desire. Both Rawls and Nozick in this sense promote the liberal concern for "the freedom and autonomy of individuals"2 despite developing different political principles in which this is realised.
