Molecular genetic testing is on a rise as developing genetic defects is increasing in our population. Molecular testing has been made available in order to test for specific conditions and life threating disorders such as cancer and genetic abnormalities. Testing is highly recommended in pediatrics in order for early diagnosis, as genetic defect have already developed in the first year of a child’s life. Due to this demand on genetic tests molecular genetics should be introduced into the children’s public hospital in order to deliver a quick and reliable testing service. Molecular testing is involved in detecting chromosomal mutations which can then be analyzed to identify what is wrong with a patient and what treatment can be done for them to live the best and normal life as they can, or to provide medical and genetic counseling to families. There are numerous methods that are used to help diagnose these disorders in pediatrics, they include the use of the PCR machine, DNA sequence analysis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cytogenetic arrays and fluoresce in situ hybridisation (FISH). There are many private molecular genetics pathology available, but unfortunately not in public hospitals, that is why this proposal is so important where all pediatric molecular testing can be done on site at the hospital. This also helps give job opportunities for a new team of scientist as the laboratory would be capable of processing approximately 200 samples per day. With the aid of the new equipment and new 7 skilled staff including one pathologist, four scientists and two technicians all the critical tasks and tests should be handled professionally. This laboratory service will also create many opportunities for the hospital as it can also offer test services for other faculties to use, where patients can come to the hospital for direct testing. Having a molecular laboratory in the hospital will help decrease turnaround times and travelling times of the samples, profit revenue for the hospital and also provide a new service to patients that was never there before.
